When designing the spaceship that will later be used in the space shooter game, we used 3D Studio and Photoshop. We did most of the work in 3D Studio including modeling the ship using different components with the polygons and then unwrapping the polygons to be able to make a material for it in photoshop. In Photoshop, we made graphics to put on our ship while including text and other aspects like the glare on windows or effects to add to the ships appearance.
